Software: Snipe-It
Problem:
The school used spreadsheets to track its fast-growing technology inventory but needed a better solution. However, it couldn't justify the recurring costs of a SAAS program.
Solution:
I set up an open-source inventory management program called Snipe-It, a fully functional and customizable inventory manager without subscription costs. As part of the setup process, I learned the program’s ins and outs and used that knowledge to create a detailed plan for how the school should organize its data in the system to best utilize it for a K-12 environment.
Software: Koha Library Software
Problem:
The school's library software was outdated and slow and required students to be manually imported each year. Additionally, only hardcover books had been entered into the system, so no paperbacks could be checked out with it.
Solution:
I researched many options and concluded that the open-source library software Koha was the best choice for the school. It had all the necessary features and no setup costs on its server. Implementing Koha involves installing the software, customizing its styling, importing books from the old software, planning the process to enter new books, and creating documentation for the system.
Software: osTicket
Problem:
As the school grew, tracking technology issues and projects via email became unsustainable. This resulted in slow response times, confusion about who was handling a problem, and lost project details
Solution:
I assisted in the research and initial implementation of an open-source helpdesk software called osTicket. After the initial server setup, I configured all the settings, add-ons, and styles the school wanted and designed the hierarchy of departments and issues to best suit a small K-12 school.
Impact:
Each of these projects provided significant increases in efficiency and organization. Together, they have saved teachers and other staff countless hours, Giving them more time to focus on their other duties.
